Dante and Virgil Crossing the Styx - Gustave Doré Print

Crossing the Styx by Gustave Doré, 1861. Illustration for Dante Alighieri’s Inferno.

This dark engraving shows Dante and Virgil crossing the river Styx with Phlegyas, while damned souls struggle in the water around them. The massive walls, rough water, and shadowy figures give the scene a grim vision of Hell.
