Four Angels of Apocalypse – Albrecht Dürer Biblical Gothic Wall Decor
This print is one of the reproductions of Albrecht Dürer’s engravings illustrating the New Testament and the Revelation of John the Theologian, 1498. In this image, Dürer depicts Chapter 9 of Revelation:
“The sixth angel sounded, and four angels were released, prepared for the hour and day and month and year, to kill a third of mankind.”
In the upper part of the engraving, God appears with four trumpets, and a golden altar stands before Him. To the right, the Sixth Angel is blowing the trumpet.
In the lower part, four angels slay people with swords. One raises a sword over a woman he holds by the hair; another is about to strike a knight fallen from his horse; the third kills a pope; the fourth kills a bearded old man.
