The Triumph of Death - Pieter Bruegel the Elder Print

The Triumph of Death, 1562, by Pieter Bruegel the Elder.

The painting shows a vast scorched and barren landscape where an army of skeletons spreads terror, chaos, and death. People flee in fear, some try to fight back, while others continue playing music as if nothing is happening.

At the center, a skeleton on horseback cuts people down with a huge scythe. The terrified crowd rushes toward what looks like shelter, but it is actually a giant coffin-shaped trap.

Everyone, from peasants to kings, becomes a victim of triumphant Death. The world seems to collapse under funeral bells rung by skeletons.
