Quintessence of Man - Four Humors Alchemical Print

Leonhard Thurneysser, Quinta Essentia, 1574. This alchemical illustration connects the four humors and temperaments — phlegmatic, sanguine, choleric and melancholic — with the elements and zodiac signs. An androgynous figure stands at the center of the composition.

In alchemy and early philosophy, quintessence was understood as the fifth and most subtle element beyond earth, water, air and fire.
