Ensayos — often understood as “Attempts” or “Trials” — is an etching by Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes from the famous series Los Caprichos, first published in 1799. The image shows a strange witchcraft scene with witches, a goat-headed figure, and a disturbing sense of initiation.

The scene suggests a first step into dark knowledge: little by little, the young figure moves forward and begins to learn from the older witches. Over time, she may become as skilled as her mentor. Like many works from Los Caprichos, the image mixes superstition, satire, fear, and black magic.
