The seal of the Goddess Babalon. Scarlet woman.
A goddess in the mystical system of Thelema, also known as the "Crimson Wife", the Great Mother and the Mother of Abominations. In mystical systems Babalon can be identified with the Shekhinah of the Kabbalists, the Sophia of the Gnostics. Babalon symbolizes potential sexuality and the Divine spark that has fallen into the material world and animates it. Among the Gnostics, she is identified with Mother Earth as the greatest source of fertility. In its highest manifestation, Babalon is the spouse of Chaos (the "Father of Life", the male creative principle). On the Kabbalistic Tree of Life, Babalon is associated with two Sephiroth: Malkut (the Divine Daughter) and Bina (the Divine Mother). Babalon often appears as a sacred harlot, riding on a Beast.
