Charon and the River Acheron - Gustave Doré Print

Charon is the ferryman of the dead in Greek mythology, carrying the souls of the deceased across the rivers of the underworld, usually Acheron or Styx, into Hades. He is traditionally described as a gloomy old man dressed in rags.

Charon ferries the dead in exchange for a payment of one obol, traditionally placed with the deceased during burial. He carries only those who have received proper burial rites.

In the story of the Golden Bough, a living person may enter the realm of the dead only after obtaining the sacred branch from the grove of Persephone. Charon carries the dead into the underworld and does not bring them back.
