Albrecht Dürer’s Melencolia I - Dark Allegory Print
Melencolia I by Albrecht Dürer shows a thoughtful winged woman sitting among strange objects and instruments. Around her are a magic square, hourglass, scales, geometric forms, tools, a sleeping dog, and a small winged child. A bat-like creature in the sky carries the title Melencolia I.
Created in 1514, the engraving is one of Dürer’s most famous and mysterious works. Its symbols have inspired many interpretations connected with melancholy, creativity, mathematics, knowledge, and the limits of human understanding.
