The Mirror of Human Life - Crowned Skeleton Print
Speculum Humanae Vitae - The Mirror of Human Life. An anonymous engraving from 1598.
The image shows Death as a crowned and winged skeleton, standing in the center with a staff. Around the figure are skulls, human figures, crowns, armor, and other symbols connected with mortality and earthly life.
At the bottom appears the Latin phrase “Mors omnia aequat, ideo vigilate” - “Death makes all equal, therefore keep watch.” The engraving presents a simple Memento Mori message: death comes to everyone, regardless of wealth, power, or social position.
